Grade 10 Math Worksheet
Topic: Arithmetic Means, nth Term, and Sum of Arithmetic Sequence (M10AL-Ic-1)
Lesson Summary:
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers with a constant difference between consecutive terms.
The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is given by the formula: a_n = a_1 + (n - 1)d, where a_1 is the first te
The arithmetic mean is the average of two numbers and can be used to find missing terms in a sequence.
The sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence is given by:
S_n = n/2 * (2a_1 + (n - 1)d) or S_n = n/2 * (a_1 + a_n)
Examples:
Example 1:
Problem: Find the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence: 3, 7, 11, ...
Solution: a_1 = 3, d = 4
Using the formula: a_n = a_1 + (n - 1)d
=> a_10 = 3 + (10 - 1)*4 = 3 + 36 = 39
Example 2:
Problem: Insert 3 arithmetic means between 5 and 17.
Solution: We need to form a sequence: 5, __, __, __, 17
There are 4 intervals, so d = (17 - 5)/4 = 3
Sequence: 5, 8, 11, 14, 17
Example 3:
Problem: Find the sum of the first 20 terms of the sequence: 2, 5, 8, ...
Solution: a_1 = 2, d = 3, n = 20
Using the formula: S_n = n/2 * (2a_1 + (n - 1)d)
=> S_20 = 20/2 * (2*2 + 19*3) = 10 * (4 + 57) = 10 * 61 = 610
Practice Problems:
Practice 1: Find the 15th term of the arithmetic sequence: 4, 9, 14, ...
Practice 2: Insert 4 arithmetic means between 10 and 30.
Practice 3: Find the sum of the first 25 terms of the sequence: 7, 10, 13, ...
