Now I did delete it from there=20 and put it into the compiler options. The linker finds the library I have set as parameter in the=20 project/options/parameters/linker ( -lwtsApi32 ) I am sure because if I change this name I get the error that the file=20 was not found Now it continues to tell me that there is a undefined reference to `WTSEnumerateSessionsA@20' even if the function I use is WTSEnumerateSessionsA Does the compiler mangle the names the way that they are different than=20 the icrosoft one ? Is mangling not used only in c++, my project is c Bye Andreas here the output Compiler: Default compiler Building Makefile: "C:\Dev-Cpp\Andreas\wtshost\Makefile.win" F=FChrt make... aus make.exe -f "C:\Dev-Cpp\Andreas\wtshost\Makefile.win" all gcc.exe main.o -o "wtshost.exe" -L"C:/Dev-Cpp/lib"=20 -L"C:/Programme/Microsoft Platform SDK/Lib" -mwindows -lwtsApi32 main.o(.text+0x33):main.c: undefined reference to `WTSEnumerateSessionsA@= 20' main.o(.text+0x4b):main.c: undefined reference to `WTSFreeMemory@4' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make.exe: *** [wtshost.exe] Error 1 Ausf=FChrung beendet |

Hi, I'm not sure, but I think that you must enter path to C:\Programme\Microsoft Platform SDK\Lib and C:\Programme\Microsoft Platform SDK\Include in the Dev-Cpp. You can do this by clicking on the Tools / Compiler Options menu. Go to "Directories" tab and "Libraries" and "C Includes" (or "C++ Includes") sub-tabs. Good luck, Blagoja |

Hi Alfred,
the only one library used in my project is the "libmsacm32.a", this
library is the only one that contains acmDriverAdd/acmDriverRemove
APIs ("grep docet"), it is in the default library path (dev-cpp/lib)
so no others directories should be included and the linker have the
"-lmsacm32" parameter setted on. Everything seems to be correct, there
are other APIs in the "libmsacm32.a" (such as acmDriverOpen) and I'm
using some of those without any linking problems (but I still need of
acmDriverAdd, without this one the entire project is unuseful).
Thank you,

$cat popentst.c

char buf[BUFSIZ]; /* BUFSIZ is declared in my stdio.h to be 1024 */

Hi Noorez, This is a case of redirecting cout (stdout) and/or cerr (stderr) to an input stream. This is something I've never tried, to be honest. A simple way would be to output redirect (>) the output of the command line program to a temporary text file, then import and display the text file in your GUI, deleting the text file after capture. BTW: insight.exe probably uses this capability, as it's actually a GUI shell for GDB. So it's source may be helpful. Hi Gartano, In my experience with this kind of occurrence, usually it means more than one library file contains the same definition and your linker parameter -lmsacm32 is probably pointing to the wrong one. That is why I recommend using grep (FINDSTR in MS Windows), used from the root of the dev-cpp library directories to find all libraries that may contain this reference. Alternatively, it may be that libmsacm32.a library file is not in a default path, i.e. ~/dev-cpp/lib or that you haven't included it's directory in Project Options->Directories->Library Directory tab if it's not in a default path. The matter is the linking step: [Linker error] undefined reference to `acmDriverAdd' [Linker error] undefined reference to `acmDriverRemove' Using a hexadecimal editor I've taked a look in the "libmsacm32.a" file and there are the definitions for acmDriverAdd and acmDriverRemove (with or without UNICODE support). Hi Andreas, The only thing that I can obviously see is the text: -lC:/Programme/Microsoft Platform SDK/Lib/WtsApi32.Lib As gcc is using the Unix convention for path names, the spaces in the path name will cause a problem. Try single quoting it as -l'C:/Programme/Microsoft Platform SDK/Lib/WtsApi32.Lib'. If that doesn't work, just physically copy it to the lib folder of dev-cpp. The other possibility is that if you're adding this to the to the linker parameters with the -l, that -l tries to add the prefix lib and suffix .a to the library, making it actually libWtsApi32.Lib.a which won't be found. As an example my use of -lgimp-2.0 in Project Options->Parameters->Linker actually refers to libgimp-2.0.dll.a in the default lib directory. It occurs to me that the problem (which is very widespread, imho) isn't
so much technical as it is attitudinal. Real software engineering is
science with a healthy dose of craftsmanship. Based on the observations
you made, I don't think any amount of books or courses are going to do
much for those people. A lot (most) of people are simply not suited for
designing and writing software. Most people are utilitarian, and "good
enough" is good enough. To make quality happen, you have to be a
perfectionist with a burning desire to make something elegant and
beautiful. You have to care.
Sometimes, when people are mentored properly, and when they're exposed
to the right principles, attitudes, and approaches, it can bring out
greatness and great developers are born. Other times, no amount of
exposure to things done correctly seems to do any good.
I'm very interested in the topic you brought up. Over the years I've
seen very few truly great designers and developers; most were just
mediocre, and a lot should have never been allowed behind a keyboard. I
think a lot of it comes with staffing properly. If anyone thinks you
can take any smart guy, or any engineer, and make him a great developer,
I think he's missing the boat. People have to really, really love it,
and want it, and it has to come from inside. Another part of the
problem is that it takes one to know one. Few people in the position to
make staffing decisions are capable of discerning which end is up.
That said, there are basic things that even poor developers should be
taught so that they approach problems in the right way. To this end,
over the years I developed a manual of best practices which I gleaned
from a lot of exposure to the good and the bad. I think that if you can
formalize a description of "best practices," along with explanations
about why this is the right thing to do, and why no other way is
acceptable, you can open dialog and get people thinking about the right
things. Even time spent arguing about this or that approach has merit,
because intelligent people will begin to think about the value of the
positions taken by the proponents.
My suggestion is to avoid buying any books- instead, maybe come up with
your own white-paper on "best practices," and start brain-storming with
the guys. Perhaps if you have a really fine example of some software or
a really slick application (and I'm talking about design and
implementation, not what the end-user sees!) then go over the high
points in a casual setting and let people see how it's done, and why.
Regards,
Israel

The title is slightly different: "Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs." I highly recommend it - even for those persons with an earlier version. Much has changed. In addition to that there are so many books from which to choose. For somewhat experienced developers I highly recommend this book:
"Effective C++:50 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Design (2nd
Edition)"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201924889/qid=1129469217/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/103-8482603-4095850?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
I also recommend the "Software Project Survival Guide" which although is
not a book on programming covers well the topic of software engineering:
