If it's any reassurance I get the exact same error message when I run your code. But I don't know how to use the debugger so let me ask a related question: What's the best way to learn how to use the debugger? I tried the help function but it's a reference for those who know how. |

vectors, of course, but I understood vectors weren't an option, that Mr Ramana wants arrays. But I don't like them very much, I'll need something that you would say "vectors!", but I tried them in a elevator simulation, and I got problems with STL, if I used vector (or list, now I don't remember when it was vector and when list) I had a problem, I tried to do it with list but then the list couldn't do one pass at it should be done. So now I am writing my own container library, since what I need is something rather complicated, and if for that I got problems, for which I need... woooo!. Well, I haven't tested the mine in that simulation (now I've forget its details), but tests with another program work fine. So I say goodbye to STL, vector, list and so, and I'll make my own container classes, I hope much more powerful than STL. Out limits! My classes have (or will have sooner or later) all capabilities of STL and more. |

For future development: I hate the feature that when I click the mouse the caret is placed where I clicked, independently of the fact that the line ends light-years to the left of that position. The other feature which consists that it does not go to the previous line when pressing the left arrow key and it reaches the beginning of the line is a nice one (being the other way is neither a bad thing), and would be either nice that other of not go to the next after reaching the end of the current while pressing the right arrow key, but without breaking the right side of the monitor. Thanks. |

Or use vector: #include <iostream> #include <vector> void f(std::vector<std::vector<int> >&array) { using namespace std; cout<<array.size()<<endl; } int main() { using namespace std; /// 2-dimensional 100x50 int array initialised to 0 vector<vector<int> >arr(100, vector<int>(50)); f(arr); } but since the array is in fact a two-dimensional array full of instances of my own String class, adding a "terminating character" will involve creating too much arbitrary code for my liking. I am still dreaming of the possibility of sizeof-ing the array with the built in operator, if anyone knows how to do this correctly. In fact, i am highly curious about the workings of the sizeof operator. I realize that since passing an array to a function is actually passing a pointer to the first object ( is this x[0] or x[0][0] in a multidimensional array?), x[0] and &x[0][0] the sizeof operator gets the size of that pointer... or does it? what are you passing the operator when the array is local? When the array is local and you pass the array's name you pass the array. A function can accept only a pointer to the first object or a reference, so in the function you pass the pointer variable (which points to the first element of the array). As a result you get the size of the pointer variable itself. No there is no way for a built in array. The only thing you can do, is pass an additional argument, the size of the array in the style void f(char *s[], const unsigned long SIZE); Or better, use some standard library container, such as vector. Hello all,
here is my short code:
#include <iostream.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main (int argc, char *argv[])
{
int x =3D 1000;
x =3D x*x;
cout << "Hello World!" << endl;
x =3D 1;
cout << "Press ENTER to continue... " << x <<endl;
getchar ();
return 0;
}
I need to watch variable x, but when I step in code while debugging each=
line with x is skiped and no x value is displayed. Only three lines (cout=
and getchar) are evaluated correctly.
Some error "No symbol x in current context." is displayed in debugging=
infos.
Does anyone know where is the problem, can you try it by yourself and write=
me your status? I need to watch variables values while debugging because=
otherwise it is not valuable for me. I have devcpp.exe 4.9.4.3.
Thank you very much for your help.
With best regards,
Vaclav Kremen.

i'm sure i've missed the rest of this conversation, but just from that email you just sent, if you haven't already, i think you should try passing the address of another object of class Exception and see if that works, just to make sure it is in fact the passing of itself that is the problem. for example: Exception obj2; Obj.SetErrorLog(&obj2); -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Do you mean having an array array of size n and call a function
function(array); and that function calculate the size in it?
I don't know about any "built-in" function for do so, but it could be done
adding a special member which should be added as the last member, so you can
search it from the begin of the array, so you can consider the size as equal
to the location of that member plus one, or it has a size of that subindex
of elements you mind plus one member you don't mind, and whenever you can
need reallocate memory or adding members you must have space for that last,
and when adding, start adding substituting that member. And then work
considering the matter of having one member which you don't use.
For example, if it is an array of chars, that member is evident, you only
need to search for '\0', but in chars* it is used, and has sense but in
other cases the equivalent you use not. You can have an array of positive
values, so you can use -1 as that member.
for(counter = 0; testmember != itemextra; counter++){
itemextra = array[counter];
size = counter + 1;
}
[size++]
You can say this size++ or not depending on whether you want size mean
size of the whole array including the last member or not. Or you can
reallocate to adjust the size to the array you need without that member and
then work with it as if you didn't use that member, and at the end you can
realloc and add it, or whatever you need or want to do.

Subject: RE: [Dev-C++] sizeof array
sizeof() reports the total size of the array when it is used in the
scope of its definition.
When you use an array as an argument of a function in reality it is not
an array but a pointer.
consider the following example:
void makea(char array[100])
{
while(*array)
*array++='a';
}
int main()
{
char somearray[500];
for(unsigned long i=0; i<sizeof(somearray)-2; i++)
somearray[i]='s';
somearray[sizeof(somearray)-1]='\0';
makea(somearray);
}
void makea(char array[100]) is equivallent to void makea(char *array)
and void makea(char array[])
So sizeof(array) when applied inside the makea() is equivallent to
sizeof(char *).
array there is char *array.

thanks ioannis, i have briefly read your reply and it is what i had feared.
is there any way to implement what i had before so that the sizeof operator
reports the size as if it were a local array? for example, can i pass the
array to the function by reference or dereference the pointer that is
passed?

Subject: RE: [Dev-C++] sizeof array
sizeof() reports the total size of the array when it is used in the
scope of its definition.
When you use an array as an argument of a function in reality it is not
an array but a pointer.
consider the following example:
void makea(char array[100])
{
while(*array)
*array++='a';
}
int main()
{
char somearray[500];
for(unsigned long i=0; i<sizeof(somearray)-2; i++)
somearray[i]='s';
somearray[sizeof(somearray)-1]='\0';
makea(somearray);
}
void makea(char array[100]) is equivallent to void makea(char *array)
and void makea(char array[])
So sizeof(array) when applied inside the makea() is equivallent to
sizeof(char *).
array there is char *array.

I understand that people here would have prefered Dev having being written in C++, I agree with their arguments about we could help, do things, make something, I got somewhat surprised by the fact of having being written in Delphi, too. But I think that the language you use for write a program is a decission of the first moment, and once you decide a language and having passing the first working lines of coding, there is no return to the beginning, you must then continue with the decision to the end. At the phase it is, I think that asking for change the language, although understandable, is out of place. If someone wants to have a port, then do it, the code is available. Perhaps I would do if know Delphi, but I have no idea about it; and I neither consider me prepared for this task. Well, we all know yet how many people are interested and attracted by this idea, so I think the voting time is end, like the story. |

A little of the code:
// A CLASS CONSTRUCTOR
AddPrinterDialog::AddPrinterDialog()
{
mAddPrinterDialogPointer = NULL;
mPointerToParent = NULL;
/* If this pointer has failed to be assigned as specified then
construction has failed (object cannot, and therefore never
has, existed.
*/
if ( mAddPrinterDialogPointer != NULL )
{
Exception ThrownObject( "AddPrinterDialog construction failed.", 31
); // Error code 31
throw ThrownObject;
}
else
{
; // Do nothing
}
}
Of course this thrown exception would be caught etc. and SetErrorLog would
be called (below).
void Exception::SetErrorLog( Exception &Obj )
{
ofstream ExceptionOfstreamObject; // For managing the text file
// Create and name the text file
ExceptionOfstreamObject.open( _T("Exception Caught Log.txt") );
ExceptionOfstreamObject << Obj.GetErrorString() << endl;
ExceptionOfstreamObject << Obj.GetErrorCode() << endl;
ExceptionOfstreamObject.close();
}
That's the cuurent code. You can see why I want the obj to pass itself. I
have a workaround, I just wondered if it was possible.

Hi all, Personally, I think the idea of re-writing Dev-C++ in C++ is pretty counter productive, but for those who want to - its your time and your effort. I'm not going to spend time trying to persuade you to do it or not. If you want to, then do it. If not, then don't. End of story. > How in the world am I supposed to get a free copy of Borland C++ > Builder? (Dev-C++ is for Win32 remember?) > I lost contact with my national warez dealer a year ago so warez isn't > an option :-) I don't think the idea was to use Borland C++ Builder (if you had that, you would already have a pretty darn good IDE - probably a lot better than Dev-C++ as it commercial software). I think the idea was to make Dev-C++ interfaceable (is that a word?) to other compilers. Borland C++ Compiler is just the command line C++ compiler like MinGW and it is pretty good. Borland offers this package as a free download (you only have to register and take a survey) at http://www.borland.com/products/downloads/download_cbuilder.html . Just download the second link (named Compiler). Personally, it doesn't matter too much to me what compiler Dev-C++ uses - MinGW, Cygwin, or Borland. I just wanted to correct the records here. MinGW seems to fit better with Dev-C++'s open-source theme, however. Also, I want to say that I really enjoy using Dev-C++ - it is great software and I am looking forward to its future. Many thanks to the developers. Well Builder includes a Delphi compiler too, so there is no need to rewrite everything from the beginning, but we can start converting it slowly, and write the new facilities in C++. The problem is.... since most of us do not know Delphi, and you only understand what is written you have to do the conversion. :) Anyway i am not insisting too much on Dev-C++ written in C++ project, but as a philosophical issue Dev-C++ would be more great if it was written in C++ (and so we had a clue of what is going on).
