Well a pointer pointing to a specific overloaded member function will point at the certain function, ignoring the other ones. I hope we are telling the same thing. This subject has been discussed on th e past, but now new evidence came up. :) =20 =20 In "The C++ Programming Language" Special Edition on page 419 it says that each object has its own member function as i was claiming in the beginning. =20 =20 It says many things but lets concentrate at the end of that page: =20 "Just like ordinary pointers to functions, pointers to member functions are used when we need to refer to a function without having to know its name. However, a pointer to member isn't a pointer to a piece of memory the way a pointer to a variable or a pointer to a function is. It is more like an offfset into a structure or an index into an array. When a pointer to member is combined with a pointer to an object of the right type, it yields something that identifies a particular member of a particular object". =20 =20 i think we were discussing it with Jason Hardman. Jason if you see it, please tell me your opinion (since you seem you are a pro). =20 =20 Ioannis =20 * Ioannis Vranos * Programming pages: http://www.noicys.f2s.com <http://www.noicys.f2s.com/>=20 * Alternative URL: http://run.to/noicys =20 |

You can either use the Windows GDI and get a device context etc..., which isn't recomended if you want speed, or you can write your own algorithm to do it. You might want to look up something like the Bresenhams algorithm which does that. If you want more information I can dig out a copy of Bresenhams I developed in college? In DirectX's DirectDraw, how do I draw a straight line from Point A having coordinates (x1,y1) to point B with coordinates (x2,y2). is there a specific function for this operation? Thanks __________________________________ www.edsamail.com |

Relying on type conversions to crop a number to a specific number of decimal places isn't the best way of going about it, although it is usualy quite effective. There are some mathematical functions for dealing with rounding and integer values, and the one I suggest you look at is abs(), or fabs(). abs() is an overloaded function available in C++ whereas fabs() is specificaly for float values (it actualy uses a double). You may already know this, but multiplying by a power of ten before apply abs and then dividing by that value again will allow you to choose to how many decimal places you want to work. Adding .5 after the multiplication will ensure proper rounding also. The problem you are having with the lack of accuracy in the float is most likely due to the inherant flaw in floating point representation. They cannot represent all values in thier range dead on, and there will always be a certain amount of rounding errors in some calculations. There's not a lot you can do about it. There are different ways of representing numbers, but I doubt you need that level of accuracy. What you can do with cout, or when converting a number to a string is to set the number of decimal places it will display, so the extra 0001 will be chopped off. For cout or other stream operations I suggest you look at the precision() method. If you are using sprintf then something like - sprintf(strarray, "%1.2f", my_float); which should (I think) produce a number of at least 1 significant digit with rounding to 2 decimal places. Experiment with it a little to see what produces the results you want. Jason. Disclaimer: This information is meant as a guide, and may not be interpreted as gospel truth. I try to reasonably, but not overly, accurate. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian McCall" <str...@ho...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2001 2:19 AM Subject: [Dev-C++] Damn floats > I'm having much trouble trying to manipulate floats. The first cast is not needed.

The second cast also is not needed. These are built in type conversions.
>=20

num1 is a float. So you display it as a float. only if you cast it as an
int you will get an int.
But the style of casting you use is the worst. Type1(x) or (Type1)x
(C-style) are equivallent and the worst. Normally in your case you can
output the int part by using an int. however if you just play with these
things the most safe is:
#include <iostream>
int main()
{
using std::cout;
using std::endl;
=20
float f=3D0.2;
=20
cout<<static_cast<int>(f)<<endl;
}
However try to *never* use casting in C++ (in contrast with C).

If you wantt to create that function don't bother, you have got
sprintf().
char s[200];
sprintf(s, "%f", 4.4);
string sf=3Ds;

I'm having much trouble trying to manipulate floats. I try to truncate the part left of the decimal like so: float num1 = 45.34; int num2 = int (num1); num1 -= float (num2); But when I display num1 (cout<<num1), I get something like 0.3400001. What am I supposed to do about this? Actually, the reason I am doing this is as part of a function that assigns a float to a string, i.e., storing num1 in something like strNum1 as "45.34" (apstring strNum1; strNum1 = num1). Any ideas on either of these two problems? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp |

Hi all I am pretty new to C++ and totally new to DEV++, but it seems like a great development platform. But I have a problem if have some programs that I did with the cygwin package using the GNU cgicc library. It was easy to compile that library for use with cygwin, but how can I compile the library for use with DEV++ ? can it be done at all ?. I tried to configure DEV++ to use my Cygwin package but the specification of the various paths does not comply with the newest cygwin package (c:\Dev-c++\Mingw and Cygwin.txt). Any help will be appreciated. Lars-Bo ________________________________________________ Lars-Bo Jacobsen, Researcher M.Sc. Ok I now think that that other linker error was as a result of this compiling error: c:\my documents\untitled1.cpp: In function `int LoadGLTextures()': c:\my documents\untitled1.cpp:78: implicit declaration of function `int free(...)' Whats wrong with using the free function? |

Hello, I just started using Dev-C++. The included editor doesn't seem to have any keyboard shortcuts for manipulating the text (like block moves). I was wondering if it does and I am just not seeing it? Or, is there another editor that is preferred? Jack -- E-Mail: jy...@tw... I figured it all out! Whooohoo! Im am so proud of myself :-) I think = this all should be added to the dev-c++ faq... how do i do that? What I did was I added "-lopengl32 -lglu32" as compiler options to the = project and then everything compiled just fine! I also replaced = CDS_FULLSCREEN with 0 |
