If you write:
char *p =3D new char[20];
if (p) {
...
}
you don't expect any warnings about a conversion to bool, so obviously it
isn't any harder to make the same conversion when you send a char* as a
parameter.
The builtin data types already have their own conversion rules.
Had it been an object you had sent to your Test() functions, you
could have created your own conversion rules by writing:
class MyObj() {
char *m_s;
...
public:
operator const std::string() {
return std::string(m_str);
}
};
To make it possible to convert the object to a std::string object.

Hi!
I encountered a kind of "stupidity", which took me quite some time to=20
debug in my original program. I had 3 functions, same name, they were=20
overloaded.
1. function's parameter is: const string&
2. function's parameter is: int
3. function's parameter is: bool
Here is a demonstration of my problem:
--- Code ---
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;
void Test( const string& str )
{
cout << "Function called, type: 'string'" << endl;
cout << " Value:" << str << endl;
}
void Test( int i )
{
cout << "Function called, type: 'int'" << endl;
cout << " Value:" << i << endl;
}
void Test( bool b )
{
cout << "Function called, type: 'bool'" << endl;
cout << " Value:" << b << endl;
}
int main()
{
Test( "This is some text" );
Test( 12345 );
Test( true );
=09
return 0;
}
--- Code End ---
And this is the output:
Function called, type: 'bool'
Value:1
Function called, type: 'int'
Value:12345
Function called, type: 'bool'
Value:1
A const char* was converted to a bool rather than to a const string&=20
without a blink (i.e. without ANY warnings, even with -Wall and -W).
Shouldn't at least the compiler spit out something, that "I'll convert=20
your text to a bool"-like warning? :)
I know, it sees char* as a pointer, and it seems easier for it to=20
convert to bool, rather than to instanciate a string object, but why=20
aren't there any *warnings* (about ambiguity)?
It made me go crazy until I found this out...
I later changed the first one to take const char* instead.
Is it related to built-in types (conversion between them is forced if=20
possible)?
Any thoughts?

Hi, Thank you very much. This was exactly what I wanted to know. It is a pitty that it is not possible to divide the implementation in .h and .cpp files. Thanks, Carla. export is noramlly used to inform that code or data is available in another object file. With templates, there are no code unless the compiler can se both the template implementation, and some references that uses the template. First then will the compiler instance a copy of the template functions, specifically adjusted according to what template parameters that was supplied. This makes it impossible to use templates without letting the compiler see the full declarations for the template. /Per W On Fri, 30 Apr 2004, manish Shrivastava wrote: > Well, I guess there is a keyword export(as given in Stroustrup's book) wh= ose > purpose is exactly this(separate compilation strategy)..Though as far as = I > know this is not supported by .NET and CodeWarrior. > > -----Original Message----- > From: dev...@li... > [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf Of Jorge > Mazzonelli > Sent: Friday, April 30, 2004 7:53 PM > To: dev...@li... > Subject: Re: [Dev-C++] Is it possible - templates (.h and .cpp) ? > > Hi, > excuse me but I'm just a newbie in C++ (most of my developpements are > made in ANSI-C) but was curious about the subject and made some google > search and found this URL: > http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/tut5-1.html. Well, I guess there is a keyword export(as given in Stroustrup's book) =
whose
purpose is exactly this(separate compilation strategy)..Though as far =
as I
know this is not supported by .NET and CodeWarrior.

Subject: Re: [Dev-C++] Is it possible - templates (.h and .cpp) ?
Hi,
excuse me but I'm just a newbie in C++ (most of my developpements =

made in ANSI-C) but was curious about the subject and made some google
search and found this URL:=20
http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/tut5-1.html. There, the author =
says at
the end the following:
/The macro-like functionality of templates, forces a restriction for
multi-file projects: the implementation (definition) of a template =
class or
function _must_ be in the same file as the declaration. That means we =
cannot
separate the interface in a separate header file and we must include =
both
interface and implementation in any file that uses the templates. /
/Going back to the library of functions, if we wanted to make a library =
of
function templates, instead of creating a header file (*.h*) we should
create a "template file" with both the interface and implementation of =
the
function templates (there is no convention on the extension for this =
type of
file other than there be no extension at all or to keep the .h). The
inclusion more than once of the same template file with both =
declarations
and definitions in a project doesn't generate linkage errors, since =
they are
compiled on demand and compilers that allow templates should be =
prepared to
not generate duplicate code in these cases. /
Hope this helped.

She´s not talking about Dev-C++ templates, but *C++ Language* Templates. ;)
More specifically she asked if gcc separate compilation of templates.
By the way, i´m interested in knowing that too :)

Hi,
I have a problem with the wchar_t type:
How do you compare two wchar_t strings ???
I tried it like this:
if(strcmp((char*)wString1, (char*)wString2) == 0){
}
But it compares only the first letters of the strings !!!
Is the a special function for this, like swprintf() for printf() ???

Hi Les. Thank you for pointing out the wxGlade tool. However, I'd like to come up with something not requiring another library to be linked to the program but rather a two-way tool as used in Delphi and C++ Builder and based on standard Win32 API calls. As for a readable format, I actually do save the dialog in a Windows-like resource file, although it still needs a lot of work to be completely .RC compatible. As for reading .RC files, it's also on my list of things to do. As I am new to GUI programming without a editor, I am just unsure about my code and if it is stable or buggy. Thank you for the feedback, I will certainly look into Glade and am sure that I will learn a lot from it. Hi. I've been working on a graphical GUI editor for the past week or so. I = have finally gotten to the stage where I can add buttons and edit boxes without crashing Windows. Now the program outputs some source = code for a C program. If anyone has the time and patience to read the generated source code I'd appreciate some = constructive feedback. I've never done GUI programming without the use of a graphical resource editor, and I often find the = documentation a bit vague at times. Any suggestions for better code would be much appreciated. The purpose of Gogga is to create an editor = to output C or C++ source code for a GUI application that does not need resource files. There are plenty of resource editors, even = a few graphical ones, but for the purpose of generation a small dialog-based application I have yet to find a suitable tool. As soon as I have the basic code sorted and cleaned out, I'll upload it = to the open source section of my webpage. Please find included at the bottom of this message the output generated from the = editor Gogga. Comments are lacking, variable names could be more descriptive and I will have it cut lines longer that 70 = characters of and continue on the next line in the near future. If = things go well, I'll have some sort of a release ready for next week. Oh, if there is a free program that does what I want, please tell me = about it so I can stop reinventing the wheel! Hi, Peter. Please, select "replay to all", instead of "reply to" when sending message. You can find old gtk+ runtime libraries by searching files which have similar name as gtk+2.0's libraries. Yah, that works, but it is always easier to do it from the keyboard.
The last time I use MSW was version 95, now that I have been forced to
use this OS again I have been using version 98, no big difference just
stupider.
Thanks!!

I just read today in "the Standard C++ Bible" (1999 I think) that there a=
re=20
special reserved words for all operators like:
and for &&
bitand for &
eq for =3D
eq_p for +=3D=20
(or something similar... didn't think I would have use for it so soon ;-)
(BTW, the book mentioned is not recommended by any means...
I've just read a chapter and it's full of nonsens so far,
e.g. "[...] the main function is declared as a function [...]".
A circular explanation! To a newbe that must be like a crash-course=20
in higher mathematics... Possibly the translator (to swedish) messed
things up pretty good...=20
Obviously the authors had a hard time to explain the basics in a=20
comprehensible way (no way near Stephen Prata), but I hope the=20
rest is better...)

Strange the ASCII code for the spanish letter 'ñ' is 164, but if I press
Alt+164, I don't get anything displayed!
I am using MSW98, is it possible to do this trick under this OS version.

Hello Carla, Take a look in your in your Dev C++ main folder. There you can find a folder named Temp. In this folder you can find the templates for the "open an new project" option. The files for C++ you shuld take a look at are: all files with the extension *.template further consoleapp_*cpp*.txt for C it would be : also all files with *.template extension and consoleapp_c.txt you can also customize all other files in this directory (after a backup of these files). If you open these files with an text editor you should be able to customize them. hope could help Eduard Kiefel |

Jamil.
