When writing a basic program to perform a calcuation I have set types as =
float to receive input (cin). When I enter a character (not a number) =
when prompted for input the program terminates. This happens even when =
using exception handling
cin.exceptions(cin.failbit);
try{ }
catch (...) { };
I've enabled exception handling via compiler options but this does not =
help? Can anyone offer any comments on how to avoid program termination =
when type mismatch occurs?
Thanks, Nate |

Hi , I have just started being interested in "Dev-Cpp". I have version 4.9.5.0 which has gcc compiler version 2.95.3-6. I am running it on windows XP and want to cross compile my source code for powerPC processor. I have referred all site notes on gcc (nearly), have found the compiler option like "-mpowerpc, -mpowerpc64, -m601 "etc..... But they just dont work!!!!!!! I get this error message : "Invalid option `powerpc' " Any clues why? Is it my configuration? Thanks in advance Manpreet __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! As you surely know, libraries come in two flavors: static and shared. Generally, static ones are name "libfoo.a", while shared ones are named "libfoo.so". Shared libraries are called "dynamic link libraries" in the Microsoft world. There are 2 ways to link a "main" against some (static) library (assuming that the library is located in the same directory as the "hello.c" file): - using the command "cc -o hello hello.c libfoo.a" - using the command "cc -o hello hello.c -lfoo -L." Hope the above is of help. -- >> gisan >> |

When a project has many files the parsing takes very long, it was recommended turn off parsing. I just started to use DevC++ 4.9.6.0 When I created a project and added all my files=20 into it (marking all of them at once in the file selecteor) it crashed. I tried again but this time=20 I added just a couple of files each time, and it=20 worked.=20 When I now re-open the project it crashes every=20 time. Trying to cut off some of the files seems to work when there are at most 53 files. 55 files or more crashes always. 54 may work. I have a win98 box 128M memory. Using default=20 setting in a WinMain project. Anyone that have an idea how to work around this? Strange enough there seems to be nothing on the bug-list. There are several tutorials on the wxWindows.org website. Check them out, as it is essential to learn how to use wxWindows. wxWindows is more of a binding tool that lets you use the GTK widgetset or win32. Another thing to do is create a new UI (wxWindows) project and just compile the basic program template shipped with the wxWindows package in dev-cpp -- Shayne http://www.shaynekasai.com On Fri, 29 Nov 2002, Ionescu Vasile wrote: > First, I'm a newbie in C++ programming but I'm a fan > of Open Source, LGPL'ed software. > So, I installed Dev-C++ 4 (latest stable), the > wxWindows libraries and 2 or 3 tutorials about > wxWindows. First, I'm a newbie in C++ programming but I'm a fan
of Open Source, LGPL'ed software.
So, I installed Dev-C++ 4 (latest stable), the
wxWindows libraries and 2 or 3 tutorials about
wxWindows. This tutorials looks great, but I'm totally
confused about how can I have a decent GUI toolkit.
In this moment, I'm ready to receive any
recommendation, tutorial, paper etc. about how to
install a GUI library for Windows and Linux with
Dev-C++, with ONE condition: this material must be
EXPLICIT and with a little example.
Could anyone give me a hand of help?
Thanks,
Glass

Try with <conio.h>, perhaps it can work, if not with <conio_mingw.h>. |

I am running Dev-C++ on a x86 Win 2K machine. I have been writing programs all term and things have compiled and run just fine. I really hate to say this, because It drives me nuts when someone else has a problem an they ask me for help, and they give me the proverbeal "I don't know what happned"! Something always causes things to happen... However, something happened, and I don't know what... and now I cannot compile and run my source except in my root directy C:\. Dev-C++ is compiling the code, it just won't run the executable file. I can navagate to the directory and run the file from its directory, just not when Dev-C++ compiles. Also, I have tried uninstalling & Reinstalling Dev-C++ I even tried Dev-Cpp but nothing has helped thus far. KB --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. priority_queue has 3 types, the 2 last having defaults:
The second is the vector<> where it stores the elements and the third is
the less<> which by default uses <.
In few words your less is redundant (and may even induce additional time
cost). So if you want to define the third argument you have to define
the second too:
typedef priority_queue< int, vector<int>, less<int> > IntPQueue;

As a function argument, because only then the second is a pointer.
Inside the scope of its definition, a
char array[]=3D"12345678901234567890";
size_t x=3Dsizeof(array);
x will always be 21 (the '\0' included).
However in void f(char array[]);
is equivallent to void f(char *);
so you can do array++; for example because all tthese are ponters.
You can do that even in the case:
void f(char array[20])
{
/* The !=3D'\0' is not needed */
while(*array!=3D'\0')
*array++=3D'a';
}
All "array" arguments of functions are pointers but we can use the array
syntax for notational purposes.

Yes he has to "remember" the size of the array when he passes it across
functions, even by passing the sizes as additional arguments, or other
tricks.

After weeks of searching I got it working. I needed to add 'c:\dev-cpp\include' to the Resource Include Directory. Note that it's referring to 'hand.cur' using a relative search, that's why it has to be added in this fashion. You have some very interesting viewpoints. I'm assuming that the programmer has already covered the basics of C++, OOP, data structures and algorithms and also using the compiler system.He wants to move on to higher levels. :-) Writing many programs do not take a very long time and it does not mean that you learn only a little during each project. It all depends on the nature, size and complexity of the program. Start with small projects. Define precisely what you want to learn from the project. This will determine the nature of the program. Then look for existing programs that do similar things. Download them, run them, see how they work. If source code is available, download it too but don't read them yet. Get a feel of how other software works, then design your own. Write the code the best way you know how at this moment. Once you've written your code, then take a look at what others have done. Compare yours with theirs. See how they do it. Is it any better? IMHO this is the best way for me to learn. If you don't know how to implement a particular feature, then read their code to see how they do it. Know why and how to do it, then write your own code. This OOP thing is great. In most cases, don't re-invent the wheel. Use other people's code, with their permission of course. Try Open Source codes. :-) IMHO, a programmer has to both READ other programmer's code and WRITE your own code. When I come to think of it, my ex-bosses, and existing clients have asked me what programs have I written and not what source codes I've read. :-) You have a great day Per Westermark. Best Regards, Yeoh -- P.S. I suppose, each programmer works and learns differently. So find a method that works and if it works for you, fine. :-) |

Hello,
Of course it doesn't work!!!
The second arguement of your template MUST be a vector and not a Compare object.
priority_queue<T, Sequence, Compare>
Here is the definition of the priority_queue template.
Sequence is by default vector, is you are ok to use vector type, so
define your template in this way:
priority_queue<int, vector<int>, less<int> > IntPQueue;
And it works ;o)
Happy coding,
Sebastien.

Hello everyone,
I have a question for you. I had a barebones but working Win32 app., =
made some adjustments, and now my resource won't compile. I tried =
undoing all of the changes I made, there were only a couple, but =
apparently I missed some. When I compile the RC script it's fine, but =
when I try to compile the RES and OBJ into an exe I get this:
Error E2206 OWDB.RES 1: Illegal character '=FF' (0xff)
Over and over until the compiler drops out. Anyone know what the issue =
is? Any input would be appreciated.

Hello Everyone!
PW> One problem with writing many programs is that it takes a very long time,
PW> while you learn only a little during each project
Well, I have to disagree here. I started programming 2 years ago. I
played too much on PC, and so my brother told that I should do
something "useful". I started from absolute zero (-273 *C), I didn't
even know what was the meaning of "programming". I learned from the
book "B.W.Kernighan-D.M.Ritchie: The C Programming Language" and I
have learned the basics. I never needed any other book.
I started my first Windows app 1 and 1/2 years ago, it was a simple
program that played Conway's Game of Life. I didn't even know anything
about memory handling that time, so I used static arrays. As the
program grew, I've read the memory handling things, and pointers from
the book, and I've learned very interesting things, and I was very
happy, that I understood pointers. Later I implemented something like
a doubly chained list (sorry, my english) from what I've heard from my
brother YEARS before. I realised later, that this type of list exists,
and is actually used often in programming.
Now, I am at writing a cross-platform free library that plays 2D
Cellular Automatons (my english again), and also implements a
(theoretically) endless universe (things like in Life32), rule
handling, reading from files, etc.
I can tell you, I've learned the most from writing, and struggling on
my own.
So by writing things all by yourself, you can learn MUCH more, than
from trying to understand often hardly optimised sources. Learning
from code reading is only advised later, when you have strong basics.

This is exactly what I think too.

Hi!
I have a little problem with Dev in STL library. The problem is in
priority_queue with declaration of function object for relational test.
The source code is:
#include <iostream>
#include <queue>
using namespace std;
int main()
{
typedef priority_queue< int, less<int> > IntPQueue; // HERE!!!!
IntPQueue ipqueue;
ipqueue.push (31);
ipqueue.push (87);
ipqueue.push (13);
ipqueue.push (29);
while (!ipqueue.empty())
{
cout << ipqueue.top() << endl;
ipqueue.pop();
}
return 0;
}
What is doing?
Thanks,
Marcos

Not true that sizeof never returns size of array. It depends on what
declaration the compiler sees when processing the sizeof operator.
void func(int *array) {
// sizeof(array) =3D sizeof(int*)
}
void func(int array[]) {
// sizeof(array) =3D sizeof(int*)
}
void func() {
int array[4];
// sizeof(array) =3D 4*sizeof(int)
}
Big gotcha about this.
char buf[100];
write(fd,buf,sizeof(buf));
converted to:
char *buf =3D malloc(100);
write(fd,buf,sizeof(buf))
would fail miserably, because the second version would only write 4 bytes
in a 32-bit machine...

The sizeof applied to a array will give you the size of a pointer, never the size of the array. Say char *array; or char array[]; Then sizeof(array) =3D 4. (at least in my intelIII x86, with win2k 4 is the size for any kind of pointer). The only solution is to have some special value for the end of the array. Which for strings is '\0', and you can try to set another depending on which kind of data you're working with and which range of values you can find, so you can then choose on of the values which are out of the range to set as that special value. So you can reach for it and you can then now, with the approppriate functions you can write the total size of the array and the size of each row of the multidimensional array. Isn't there a keyword sizeof in C/C++? It seems like I remember one but I've never had to use it. I think there is one and I think it returns the number of bytes in the array of objects. All you would have to do is divide by the number of bytes that is in just one object. I may be off on this. Like I said, I haven't really had to use this before. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
