About 3 months ago, I asked for some examples of using the debugger. gi...@li... was kind enough to make up a zip file and sent it as an attachment to a message on 6/30/02 3:46:54 PM Pacific Daylight Time. After looking at the file, I accidentally deleted it. Does anyone have that file attachment? Apparently it was sent in a zip file called doc.tgz? If you do could you sent it directly to me, or perhaps to the group as it contains a few debugger examples that would be of help to many of us. Thanks gi...@li... for putting together the examples! Hi *, I've been playing around today with MinGW 2.0.0 (gcc 3.2) and I've found that exe files are really bigger than the ones produced by MinGW 1.1 (gcc 2.95.3). Build Time: File Size: Exe File: 17/05/2002 18:30 6.656 NetCmd1.exe 01/10/2002 18:13 53.248 NetCmd2.exe I've tried with an old project (fully functional, no new code since some months), so source code is the same. Object files have been rebuild for the new version. Makefile is almost the same (except lib & include paths for each version), and CFLAGS from both makefiles is: CFLAGS = $(INCLUDE_DIRS) -fexceptions -s -O3 So... Why the increment? Any hints here? Thanks Earnie, Cleaning my project directories works a treat now. However when I run clean from Dev-C++, it cleans both .obj and .exe files. Since the makefile is generated automatically by Dev-C++ how do I tell it not to delete .exe files ? Are you still stuck with this? My book says CreateWindowEx is: CreateWindowEx(DWORD ExStyle, LPCTSTR Classname, LPCSTR WindowsName, DWORD Style, int X, int Y, int Width, int Height, HWND hParent, LPCTSTR hMenu, HINSTANCE hInstance, LPVOID Param); I'm surprised that casting each parameter explicitly is not working. Someone recently mentioned a tool in the mingw-util collection that can read a MSVC .dsw file and produce a gnu makefile. If Mysql++ comes with the MSVC files, this may help. <http://mefriss1.swan.ac.uk/~jfonseca/gnu-win32/software/utils/> Other than that, I suggest using ./configure in a MSYS environment: <http://www.mingw.org/msys.shtml> But support for mingw is somewhat limited (but growing). Else its just doing it by hand. Elizabeth |

No, I don't think Microsoft adds these lines to the executable. If you run the executable from the command line, I'm pretty sure you don't see this behaviour other than when testing the application from the IDE. /Per W On Mon, 30 Sep 2002, Samuel Keding wrote: > I don't know if it would make up the difference in > size, but Microsoft adds a couple lines to every > executable. I think that may be only true in certain cases, such as with Student/Learning Editions. Or perhaps it's an option I don't have turned on. When run, the executables I produced in this experiment (and others run since I recently installed the .net IDE) do as expected and return to the command prompt. I do remember the "Press any key to continue" behavior from the "Learning Edition" of MSVC++ 6 that we used in CS classes at Belhaven College, though. (And I found it annoying, to be honest.) regards, Rob > -----Original Message----- > From: dev...@li... > [mailto:dev...@li...]On Behalf Of Samuel > Keding > Sent: Monday, September 30, 2002 10:14 PM > To: dev...@li... > Subject: [Dev-C++] Re: compare and contrast > > > I don't know if it would make up the difference in > size, but Microsoft adds a couple lines to every > executable. Hi,
I had a similar problem using the common font dialog in VB. As far as I can
remember you have to specify a type of font to list using one of the flags
otherwise Windows doesn't know which fonts to enumerate.
CF_WYSIWYG, CF_PRINTERFONTS or CF_TTONLY

to display font dialog:
case WM_COMMAND:

CHOOSEFONT chFont;
chFont.lStructSize=sizeof(CHOOSEFONT);
chFont.hwndOwner=hwnd;

chFont.iPointSize=1;
chFont.Flags=CF_INITTOLOGFONTSTRUCT|CF_EFFECTS;
chFont.rgbColors=RGB(0,0,0);
chFont.nFontType=REGULAR_FONTTYPE;
if(!ChooseFont(&chFont))
MessageBox(hwnd,"Error in font

}
break;

The error occurs at : while (fs!='.') strncpy(ls, fs, 1); ls is a string (In C point of view) and fs is a char. Char is not a string. You must consider strings as arrays of char. Arrays are seen like pointers to allocated memory in C. And char is a one-byte implementation of int. strncpy wants two pointers to arrays of char as first two parameters. You pass one pointer and one char (one int). Didn't tried this, but you should write : while (fs!='.') strncpy(ls, (char*)&fs, 1); Although getting an index initialised to 0 at the beginning of the loop and making loop look like this : while (fs!='.') ls[index++]=fs; ls[index]='\0'; Would be much better IMHO. Kind regards -- Seb |

Thanx Elizabeth. I've already tried this solution but I can get no better results. The errors occurs here : hHyperLinkWnd= CreateWindowEx(dwExStyle, wcex.lpszClassName, "", dwStyle, HypLinkData.cx,HypLinkData.cy, size.cx,size.cy, hWndParent, NULL, wcex.hInstance, this); <- Here at the "this" pointer passing, compiling crashes I've tried to pass "NULL" as parameter but same results. I'm really stuck with this. Anybody ever tried to compile this class under DevCpp ? Kind regards -- Seb |

Odd.. the equivalent of that in C compiles to 8kb in GCC3.2 - 4KB with
GCC 2.95

Ahh, I've just learned my way around MSVC++ a bit better now! Oddly
enough,
the difference in executable size between debug and release mode was
never
covered in any of my classes.
The release mode version of the executable is down to 164 KB, which is
still
a healthy bit larger than the one generated with Dev-C++, but not nearly
as
bad as the original version.

I don't know if it would make up the difference in size, but Microsoft adds a couple lines to every executable. It is something like cout << "Press any key to continue."; cin.ignore(256,'\n'); so microsoft's stuff would be a little bigger unless, you added those lines manually in Dev. Unless dev does it nowadays. I wouldn't know because I have an older version of dev. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Interesting. I don't have version 6 available. Does anyone else have a way
to compare or contrast?

Ahh, I've just learned my way around MSVC++ a bit better now! Oddly enough,
the difference in executable size between debug and release mode was never
covered in any of my classes.
The release mode version of the executable is down to 164 KB, which is still
a healthy bit larger than the one generated with Dev-C++, but not nearly as
bad as the original version.

I've been teaching myself C out of a book, and am now putting it into practice, using Dev-cpp 4.9.0.4 or whatever the second newest release was (I haven't upgraded yet.) When trying to compile the attatched program, I get 3 copies of this error: "Passing arg 2 to `strncpy' makes integer without pointer cast" (or something close to it, I can't exactly remember) What is that, and how do I fix it? Also (before I got those errors and was able to compile), when I try to log in inside my program, I get an illegal error that says "FUNK OS has caused an error in MSVCRT.DLL" and it crashes. Again, why and how to fix it? Along with my program, there is a "userlist.txt" in the same directory that has "Josh.Lukas.Family." in it. It's supposed to check for usernames from this file. And before anyone asks, I don't understand how to use the debug program. |

Retail mode? I'm not familiar with that term.
The process I used was to create a New Win32 Project, selecting console
application and checking blank project on the Win32 Application Wizard
dialogue. Then I selected Add New Item (.cpp file) and paste the source into
it.
I saved the file, built & compiled.

Some tips, be sure you're in retail mode, you're not linking statically any
unused library and you started a Win32 Console project.
If the size still is the same, I don't have the slighest idea :)

Hello Everybody,
I've just upgraded to 4.9.6.0
when i start DevC++ i get a popup that refers to
Errors 2700 --> 2705
Also when i compile HelloWorld.cpp or .c examples by
themselves they work, but if i use the project feature
as per the introduction in the project popup, they
page default my computer.
TIA,
Eric

This isn't exactly cutting-edge science, but I pass it along for posterity
anyway.
I have Dev-C++ and Microsoft Visual C++ .net Standard installed on the same
Win2K machine here, and compiled the same file in each:
#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
int main()
{
cout << "Doh!";
return 0;
}
The difference in size between the .exe files created by the two programs
was the curious part.
Microsoft Visual C++ .net Standard ==> 452 KB
Dev-C++ ==> 71 KB
It's hardly scientific, based on only one scenario, but I thought it was
interesting.
regards,
Rob
