Hi, I hate to step into this at this point, but what the heck... First off, let me state for the record that my .NET experience is measure in days (approx. 1 week at this point), and that although I am always open to solid alternatives, I do find I get more done with MS products than with any others. (I've done the Linux/BSD/QNX thing, tried Corel/Sun (StarDivision) and a handful of other office apps -- I've tried Borland/Metrowerks and a veritable mountain of free/open development tools, but in the end...). Now let me say... it's going to be a long post, but hopefully worth a read. (If you were worried about being long-winded Mac... 8-) (Oh! Please _reply directly_ to me. The list doesn't need three months of C# discourse, unless it becomes a Dev-C++ option...) I'd like to clarify a few things at this point... I'll give you my read, you tell me if I'm right/wrong/or just have a differing opinion. First... enough of this real language crap. I've been working developing business-oriented systems for the past 3 years, and I've found VB6 does what I need to get things done. It's not considered a "real" language, but it gets results, and it runs in plenty of real-time, round the clock (even mission critical) venues. Want to see some hardcore, top-notch VB programmers, stop by VISBAS-L/VISBAS-BEGINNERS on peach.ease.lsoft.com. You'd be surprised what you can do with any language if you take the time to figure out what you should be doing, and how it can best be done in that language... Next, the whole C# syntax. Yeah, it looks like Java (it also looks like C, and it's got a hint of Delphi... as I understand it, the lead language designer was a Delphi designer at Borland before joining MS...). The point here, is does it have what is needed to be a useful programming language? Well, it's got all the standards. There are decision structures (including a switch statement, that doesn't require goto, though it's used as to illustrate what MS are referring to as a jump-statement in the SDK docs... _break is there_, same as it is in C... if you don't use it, you'll drop through... same as C/C++/etc.). There are loop structures. You can declare functions (and classes --- with easy property (set/get) function setup). You can declare variables in a rainbow of types. There are trendy, and useful things like namespaces, and self-generating documentation too... It's a modern programming language folks. It's really not that ugly, or tough when it comes right down to it. It even protects you from mucking around in memory (pointers are powerful, but dangerous...). However, if you really want unmanaged stuff... apparently it's there. For those worried about platform independence... well, great thing is this. Write your code in C#, and you can integrate with anybody writting in any other .NET language (loads of 'em thus far as I understand it... even COBOL if you like... <shudder>). According to the Mono project, you can currently use Mono on Linux, Windows and Solaris. Even MS were going to port .NET to FreeBSD if I recall properly... As to what can be done with C#... well, I'm taking a leap of faith here and saying you probably can't write drivers with it (or an OS)... at least not exceedingly easily. However, compilers... sure. Will they produce native executables? If you like... an executable is just a chunk of binary data with a specific format, like a lot of other data formats. There are variations (ELF, COFF, etc.), right. If you know the spec., and had the desire, you could right something to generate an EXE. Finally, regarding APIs, and virtual machines, etc. No, none of these are particularly new. Does it matter. OOP has been around since SmallTalk (late 70s, early 80s)... is it cool today? Why? (hint... it's useful). Besides, if MS decided not to do any of this stuff... they'd be blasted for being out of touch with what reality; if they change things too radically... it's too much change. Why do you think VB programmers were ticked with MS over VB.NET? (which was tweaked to avoid some unpleasant breaks in compatibility) If you wanted something completely different (and innovative) you'd have something filling a niche (like Lisp). MS are out to make money (aren't you?), and they do that by offering a quick, easy tools to folks who have to go out into world and use those tools to meet the ill-defined nature of turning human behaviour into solid partially (or fully) automated systems. It's not about the code, it's about the people who use it (programmers and _especially_ end users). I still program for fun, but not when somebody is paying me to protect their livelihood. (It's one of the things I didn't think about on the road to becoming a programmer, but it's something I strive to keep in mind every waking moment now!) Simply put... Easier language = more time to figure out how people work (and translate that into "their" software... as opposed to producing something and then telling people how they have to behave to use "my" software). So, I've said my piece and I'm feeling better about it. How are you after having read it? 8-) Wait!!! Before you answer that... respond to me directly (see below for my email). This is a Dev-C++ mailing list! I'll respond as best I can (I expect to be out of the loop in the next little while... becoming a father, and all that jazz...). On a side note (or to bring things back to around to Dev-C++). Why not make the IDE more generic? Should just be project files that are somewhat proprietary. Syntax colouring is available for a ton of languages these days... There would have to be a way to plug in the languages (to keep things simple), or maybe just default to MinGW C++, and allow the user to specify the compiler/make tool/etc. (Already done in part, I'm using Dev-C++ on my own installation of MinGW... not the one bundled with 5... works like a charm.) In fairness... I know. It comes down to time, and energy. So, maybe a vision for the future (haven't checked the Dev-C++ page in awhile, it could be, and very likely is, that this is, in at least some degree, mentioned there. I've even heard you can find out how to unsubscribe from the mailing list somewhere there too! 8-) Take 'er easy folks. I look forward to hearing from you. --- Matthew Hickson mhickson AT sympatico DOT ca (you know what to do) |

As mentioned in an answer, in the resource editor copy and paste doesn't work, and it should. |

In the resource the archives like hand.cur, or icon.ico are typed folder/file, and Dev does not find it, since it is a folder out of the folders it searches, you must substitute folder/ with the full path to th= e file. In my failed trials first appears this error I solve that way, that= 's the problem. [Then come the linker errors! (Posted some days ago)] If after this the program compiles rigth, tell me, I want know if I try something more or delete wxwindows. This remembers me that in the resource editor you cannot copy and paste, something that shall be implemented. I suspect my problems with wxwindows are due to a bad building of it, I m= iss somethig. I make -f makefile.g95 in wx/msw, then it seems to compile everything, when I try other makefiles (for other parts, libararies of pn= g, tiff, etc) it says there is nothing to do. Can you e-mail me a short description of how did you build it? There is no problem. There is a project under linux to compile c#. It's name is mono and is places at www.go-mono.org Like everything in linux world, a great effort is done trought many, many people over internet. So the problem now is make any adjustment to devc for use the new compiler. C# is easy, c++ is better. --- Bob Wilson <bo...@ph...> wrote: > Teodorescu, > > > Is anyone interested to port c# on dev-c++?? > > While that might be an interesting project, it would > pose some problems, not > so much for dev-c++ but for the mingw compiler. > C#.NET does not compile to > native code and the .NET framework requires an > intermediate code which the > mingw compiler does not produce. Teodorescu, > Is anyone interested to port c# on dev-c++?? While that might be an interesting project, it would pose some problems, not so much for dev-c++ but for the mingw compiler. C#.NET does not compile to native code and the .NET framework requires an intermediate code which the mingw compiler does not produce. The compiler would have to be redesigned to accomplish one of two things. Either it would have to produce the .NET intermediate code or it would have to parse and compile C# code and pass it to the linker to produce executable files. Both approaches, while they might be very interesting exercises, they would require a tremendous amount of time and intellectual effort. Regards, Bob Wilson This has been cross posted to the mingw news group. |

Adam, > I have C++ .Net. It is real complicated, couldn't figure it out. So I got Dev C++. If you are having trouble with the IDE, you might consider "Beginning Visual C++ 6" by Ivar Horton. The entire book uses VC++ 6.0 and it greatly simplifies the Visual Studio learning curve. Admittedly, C++ .NET, or Visual C++ 7.0 if you prefer, is a little bit different, but the differences are not that great in terms of the user interface. The book lists for $49.00, but you can get it for much less. Amazon.com lists the book for 34.99 new and 29.99 used. You might find it at your local library, but I doubt it. Regards, Bob Wilson |

Hi, I would like to use a control in my win32 app written in C++ using ONLY win32 API (i.e. not MFC) that lets me write text in different fonts or colours to the screen, but is read only, i.e. is for output only, not input. Before implementing the functionality of this control, i had made it a simple edit control, because the simple edit control for my input window is working fine, but it seems this will not work for output as edit controls set their text all at once (i need to be able to send text to the control as i need to, and have it appended) and edit controls cannot take text of more than one font. the next thing i thought of is to use the TextOut function, but i fear this will not be very easy, and may not be a complete solution, because i'll need the text to be scrollable after there is too much of it, and it needs to word wrap to the size the user makes the window. what i have been looking at tonight is the richedit control, which may do the job, but i cannot find any information about how to use it using win32 api calls in c++. is richedit the way to go? if so, how do i use it? can i create one using CreateWindowEx and send it messages using SendMessage or specialised functions? this is what i would like: HWND hOutput = CreateWindowEx(special edit control thingy details); HFONT hFont = CreateFont(... whatever) SendTextorSimilar(hOutput,hFont,char* text,etc...); GetTextorSimilar(hOutput,&text,etc...); something along those lines. is there a control for me? is there documentation? by control, obviously i mean a window which is going to be a child window of my app. also, all the functionality of the control has to be already written up so i can just call the functions, so does this mean it has to be a common control (i don't know how many of these there are)? my biggest fear right now is that there is no common rich text control (like there is no splitter control) and i'll have to write something myself like i wrote my splitter bar window, but it won't be so easy. so, anyone know how to use richedit in win32 api? thanks ramana p.s. i will probably not reply to (nor receive) any replies to this message for the next 14 days or so, because i'm going away so, yeah, (if anyone is interested lol) |

I think I'd rather write a function, even a one-liner and call it than use GOTO. Rob http://uselesspython.com original message: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Teodorescu Cristian wrote: Ioannis Vranos wrote: <snip /> Bad and good Bad becuse they called goto. Good beacuse it help you to define a way a good one in a switch sometimes i have to write smth like switch (x){ case 1 : code_1 ;break case 2 : code_2 ;break case 3 : code3+code 1:break case 4 : code 4+code 2:break default : break; }; so in C# : switch (x){ case 1 :code_1; case 2 : code_2; case 3 : code 3 goto 1; case 4 : code_4 goto 2; }; more simple [:-)] It was something like: switch(x) { case 1: x=2; goto 3; case 3: y=4; case 5: z=6; default: // something } As i said something *like* that. So if you want to do the same job for some range of values you have to use gotos! e.g. in C++ you would do: switch(x) { case 1: case 2: case 3: cout<<"Get lost loser!\n"; break; // ... } in C# you have to do sonething like: switch(x) { case 1: goto case 3; case 2: goto case 3; case 3: something_java_like.writeconsole_something("Get lost loser!\n"); // ... } Ioannis * Ioannis Vranos * Programming pages: http://www.noicys.cjb.net * Alternative URL: http://run.to/noicys ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by:ThinkGeek Welcome to geek heaven. http://thinkgeek.com/sf _______________________________________________ Dev-cpp-users mailing list Dev...@li... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dev-cpp-users -- "Giving the Linus Torvalds Award to the Free Software Foundation is a bit like giving the Han Solo Award to the Rebel Alliance." --Richard Stallman at the 1999 LinuxWorld show |

Yes, your solution is the best. I just got confused by all those gotos
even in C# simulation mode. A sign of what will happen to me when i will
start using MS languages. :)

STRICT, like WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN tells the compiler (or maybe windows) to set a load of variables and the environment before beginning the program properly. Rather than you writing loads of code the STRICT macro will do it in one go. i think it is just #define STRICT >From: "Napoleon Ahiable" <nah...@so...> >To: <dev...@li...> >Subject: [Dev-C++] Defining STRICT in Dev-C++ >Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 11:50:12 +0100 > >Hello, > >To be able to compile a win32 API program, It is recommended that I define >STRICT. Hello, To be able to compile a win32 API program, It is recommended that I = define STRICT. Can someone explain what STRICT does and how to define = it. Hi Mr. Cristian,
I'm not sure if this is the best solution for your 'problem', but.. what
about this code?
switch (x){
case 3 :
code3;
// NO break!!!
case 1 :
code_1;
break;
case 4 :
code 4;
// NO break!!!
case 2 :
code_2;
break ;
default:
default_code;
break;
}
Just my 2 cents,
Santy
BTW, using inline functions is at least as good solution as this or even
better, thanx Ioannis for pointing it out!! ;o)

Bad and good
Bad becuse they called goto.
Good beacuse it help you to define a way a good one in a switch sometimes i
have to write smth like
switch (x){
case 1 : code_1 ;break
case 2 : code_2 ;break
case 3 : code3+code 1:break
case 4 : code 4+code 2:break
default : break;
};
so in C# :
switch (x){
case 1 :code_1;
case 2 : code_2;
case 3 : code 3 goto 1;
case 4 : code_4 goto 2;
};
more simple :-)
Perhaps a bad design issue? My first solution to this is to make small
inlining functions for code1 & code2.

i was aware that there is information available on the internet, however, it was more practical for me to ask my specific questions in the mailing list and information from microsoft's web site will be steered more towards promotion of C# rather than helping me decide whether i should learn it and how it compares, realistically, to C++. thanks for the sdk site though :) -----Original Message----- From: Zodiaq [mailto:zo...@ac...] Sent: Tuesday, 2 July 2002 7:36 PM To: Ramana Kumar Subject: Re[2]: [Dev-C++] C# Hello Ramana and all Dev-C++ users, Tuesday, July 2, 2002, 9:42:46 AM, Ramana wrote as follows: RK> THANKYOU so very much to Ioannis and his many posts demonstrating his much RK> appreciated wealth of knowledge. Microsoft doesn't innovate, they just take old technologies, put a
marketing campaigne around it, and claim that it's theirs.
=20
fasle .net is not an old tech.
=20
You're wrong, .Net is just a VM like java, with nothing new as JavaVM=20
isn't limited to be used with Java (more than 100 different languages/
compilers use it). A big API with classes for doing everything you need
isn't a new thing too, Java already had it, and before Java other =
platforms
got it too, If you call "new tech" the fact that you can use the API =
from=20
different languages, there're lots of precedents too. Finally, the =
famous=20
(and now rooted to death) Hailstorm autentification service is not a new =
thing,
Kerberos could have done the same, and it has existed for years. I think =
Hongli
Lai is right, Microsoft doesn't innovate, just puts a big marketing =
campaing with=20
too much hype so it feels it's a new thing they're doing (like the 3d =
desktop for
longhorn, when there was a running one for XWindows for years) but =
without any
supporting fact behind. They don't innovate, just copy what has been =
done before.
If you look at GUI evolution you'll see that their only REAL innovation =
(and I guess=20
I've not searched enough to find a precedent) was the taskbar (a minor =
tweak of Apple's
task drop down menu) everything else already existed. C# has some good =
things (namespace=20
being one of them), but big drawbacks (it doesn't exist a good non =
propietary implementation=20
yet as momo still has to grow).
=20
My 2cents

C# is a C-style language (at least advertised as such) which permits to do the basic programming stuff (which is not a bad thing), like VB. > > I know that you have greater control over memory management > than in C++, > that's about it.
